In our free online minesweeper games, you must locate all mines (or "bombs") in a mine field as quickly as possible. You do this by uncovering squares that do not contain a mine using your left mouse button, and marking squares that do with a flag, using your right mouse button.
Mines
When you uncover a square, you will either see a mine (and lose the game), or the number of mines directly adjacent to (or "touching") that square, ranging from 1 through 8. (If there are no mines touching the square, you automatically uncover all adjacent empty squares.)Counters
There are four counters, displaying your Total Time and Total Score, the time remaining for this game, and the number of flags left. When you mark a square with a flag, either correctly or incorrectly, the flag counter is decreased; however, it will never go below zero. You can "unmark" a square (and remove the flag) by right-clicking on it again.Click on the "smiley" to start the game. Play quickly yet accurately: if you solve a game by marking all mines with flags, the remaining seconds for that game are added to your total score. However, if you uncover a mine or let the time run out, you lose the game and do not gain any points.
The objective of the game is to reach a certain point score (depending on the skill level you have chosen, see below) as fast as possible.
Minesweeper: Beginner
This version is played on a 8 x 8 grid. It contains 10 mines, and you must obtain 100 points as fast as possible to make it into the Hall of Fame. You have 99 seconds to solve each game.Minesweeper: Intermediate
This version is played on a 16 x 16 grid. It contains 40 mines, and you must obtain 400 points as fast as possible to make it into the Hall of Fame. You have 399 seconds to solve each game.Minesweeper: Expert
This version is played on a 30 x 16 grid. It contains 99 mines, and you must obtain 1000 points as fast as possible to make it into the Hall of Fame. You have 999 seconds to solve each game.Hall of Fame
Each version of our Free Online Minesweeper Games has its own Hall of Fame, in which the top 5 scores are displayed for the past 24 hours, the past week, the past month, as well as the all-time high scores for that version.Reset
You can press the "Reset" button to reset your Total Time to zero. However, this will also reset your Total Score to zero, so you will be asked for a confirmation.Implementation Details
Our implementation of minesweeper differs from other implementations in certain ways. Specifically:- In our version, you do not have to uncover all squares to solve a game; marking all mines with flags is sufficient. (In fact, the game stops after you've correctly marked all mines, even if there are uncovered squares left!)
- We only use single mouse clicks, using either the left mouse button to uncover a square or the right mouse button to mark it with a flag.
- In our version, squares that have not yet been uncovered can only be "blank" or marked with a flag; there is no third state for squares about which you are uncertain.
- To make it into the Hall of Fame, it is not enough to solve one game really quickly; instead, you must reach the point score for the skill level you have chosen as fast as possible, which always requires at least two games. (We feel this puts a higher emphasis on skill, rather than luck.)
